Wikipedia Trail: from "Leather" to "Form-based Code"

This week my Wikipedia trail began at the word leather. Leather is a durable and flexible material. It produced by tanning animal rawhide and skin. The leather cattle hide is used to cover furniture and to make various types of clothing.

From the word leather my Wikipedia trail led me to the word heavy industry. Heavy industry refers to an industry that makes large and heavy products. An example of this type of industry is machine tools and steel fabrication.

From heavy industry my Wikipedia trail led me to the word zoning. Land is divided up into zones according to the areas authority. Zoning plans are enacted by law. An area can be zoned for commercial or private use.

My final word on this weeks Wikipedia trail is form based code. I had never herd of a form based code before this weeks Wikipedia trail. A form based code (FBC) is a means of regulating land development to achieve a specific urban form. Form-Based Codes foster predictable built results and a high-quality public realm by using physical form (rather than separation of uses) as the organizing principle,

Balance Within the Law

It is amazing what you can learn by following a Wikipedia trail. I chose to start with the word law.
Law is formally written rules that govern our society. Most of our laws stem from English common law. The law is governed through social institutions to govern behavior. Society is also governed by informal rules. These are rules that are unwritten but accepted by society to be appropriate.

Religious law refers to the moral and ethical rules set forth by religious institutions. These rules vary across different religions and cultures. Like all social constructs these cultures are not only culturally dependent but they change over time, which means they are temporally relevant.

Precedent is established through previous court rulings. As laws are overturned or found to be unconstitutional rulings may go against precedent. Sociologist Alfred Godfredd said that today's deviance can become tomorrow's morality.

By the end of my Wikipedia trail I came across the word Statutory law.
Statutory law or statute law is written law set down by a body of legislature or by a singular legislator.  While I chose a topic that was familiar to me, you can chose a topic you are unfamiliar with and learn some new facts.

For this weeks Wikipedia trail I decided to look up random subjects and chose a word I was unfamiliar with. I came across the word Lagina and thought it would be an interesting place to start. Lagina is an ancient cult site for archeologists and tourists. It dates back to the Carian period and exstended under the Seleucide Kings. It has been inhabited since the Bronze Age.

From Lagina my Wikipedia trail got me interested in the Bronze Age. An ancient civilization is defined to be in the Bronze Age either by smelting its own copper and alloying with tin, arsenic, or other metals, or by trading for bronze from production areas elsewhere.

From the Bronze Age I decided to look into Arsenic. Arsenic is a chemical element. It is considered a metalloid. Metallic arsenic is used to make car batteries. Arsenic is also used in pesticides.

Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a form of groundwater pollution that is actually caused by natural high levels of concentrated arsenic in groundwater. Wikipedia Trail: from "Devon" to "Roman Empire"

Devon is a county of England. Fairytales often portray pixies to have lived within Devon. I discovered Devon as a origin of pixies as I was researching information for my storybook project. Devon is also referred to as Devonshire. I have not decided which form of the word I will use within my storybook. Devonshire seems somewhat more formal to me. The origin of the word Devon is British. This plays fits nicely with my storybook, which takes place in Great Britain, under the Roman Empire.

Roman Britain was the area of the island of Great Britain that was governed by Roman Empire, from AD 43 to 410. Roman Britain was governed by emperors. The Roman Empire usually refers to the post-republican, autocratic government period of Roman civilization, centered on Rome and its successor capitals on the Italian peninsula, from 27 BC to 395 AD. Great Britain is a large island in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest island in Europe.

I think intertwining Roman Britain's history with mystical fairytales is going to make my storybook very intriguing. The whole experience of writing a storybook is a fun adventure.

Wikipedia Trail: from "Team" to "Motivation"

My Wikipedia trail for week 4 started at "team" , suggested to me by my step son, Landyn. He is a huge sports fanatic. A team is a group of people or linked together in a common purpose. For example, the University of Oklahoma's football team works together to complete a variety of plays set forth by their team leader, their coach.

Team constructing or "Team building" uses collaborative tasks to enhance team unity and define roles within the team. Overtime these tools are thought to improve the teams performance, especially organizational performance.

"Organization development" is the study of successful organizational change and performance of teams over time. Organizational development is thought to influence the motivation of teams. These studies began in the 1930.

"Motivation" is a theoretical construct used to explain certain behaviors, such as actions, desires, and needs. A team that is not motivated to win usually performs badly, but a team that is highly motivated to win has a better chance of doing so.

Grades are used by teachers to assess their students performance in different courses of study. The concept behind grading has recently came under fire by individuals who believe that grades are not a true indication of what a student has learned or not learned during the course of their studies. Educators realize now more than ever that children learn differently and therefore test differently.

An educational stage refers to the seven different levels of formal learning. The first level of formal learning is referred to as primary education. The second stage is referred to as tertiary education. Unfortunately the other five levels of education were not covered on the Wikipedia cite.

Primary school is commonly referred to as elementary school. Children receive their primary education between the ages of five and twelve. After they have received a primary education they go onto receive a compulsory education. It is referred to as compulsory education because it is required by law. The state as a compelling interest to protect and educate the children who live within its borders. There have been many challenges to such state laws, typically based on religious objections to the law.

Wikipedia Trail: from "Family" to "Social Structure"

"Family" is where my Wikipedia trail began. When most people think of family they think of a group of individuals that are biologically related. The actual definition of family is a bit more broad in nature. Family can refer to individuals that simply co-habitat. The concept of family has evolved over time as gender roles have become more fluid.

From "family" my Wikipedia trail led me to "socialization." Those who study the social sciences consider socialization to be the lifelong process of learning a cultures social norms, values, and beliefs. Parents are a key factor in socializing their children to behave in a way that society agrees is appropriate. When  individuals violate social norms they are said to be deviant. Deviance much like family, gender, and reality are all social constructs. They are culturally dependent and temporarily relevant.

From "socialization" my Wikipedia trail led me to "agency." Agency is an individuals capacity to act independently. In essence it is an individuals ability to act of their own free will without outside influences.

Some examples of  outside influences, referred to as "structures," are things such as social class, religion, gender, ethnicity, and customs. Social structure is the patterned social arrangements in society. These arrangements tend to influence the behavior of the individual within society.

About Mythology

Originally I was curious about the origin of mythology. Mythology is a collection of stories that people from different times, religions, and cultures was used to tell others about their way of life. It is a way to preserve their history. As I read more about mythology I became curious about renaissance mythographers. Renaissance mythographers were people who wrote mythology between the fourteenth and seventeenth century renaissance period, which is thought to have started in Florence. Renaissance

From there I found a link to inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning is something that provides strong evidence that supports a specific conclusion. As a I study for the LSAT I am employing both Inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning.
Which is why my next link led me to take a closer look at deductive reasoning.
Deductive reasoning helps to link an authors premise to their conclusion. For example, on the LSAT a test taker can deduct answer choice that do not link the author's premise to the author's conclusion.
